On September 28 and 29 Neil Leonard, american composer, saxophonist and transdisciplinary artist, will be at Fabrica for a workshop and a live concert titled “Healing Wind”, a tribute to Tadao Ando’s architecture.
The workshop, titled “Sound Installation and Sonic Interventions”, open to all Fabrica young creatives, provides a context for participants to investigate connections between architecture, urbanism, contemporary art and sonic practices.
The concert, titled “Healing Wind”, is a response to Ando’s statement: “I don’t believe architecture has to speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise of sunlight and wind.”
In “Healing Wind”, the current of air is a metaphor for social change. The work is created for the post-Covid era that presents a unique opportunity for work within the arts that can support local, national and global healing. My woodwind performance provides a context for communal listening, and encourages a pace for breathing that can be serene (complementing Ando’s designs), and underlines the shared humanity of visitors.
Leonard’s works include concerts for ensembles with live electronics, audio/visual installation and multimedia performance. Leonard works with artist from film, video, installation, dance, and theater to create and perform music, often using immersive multichannel audio configurations. Large scale installations and performances with Magdalena Campos, Fujiko Nakaya, Phill Niblock and Tony Oursler were featured by the Tate Modern, Documenta, Venice Biennale, Whitney Biennale.
Leonard has taught electronic music composition and production in more than a dozen countries. He is a Professor at the Berklee College of Music and the founding Artistic Director of the Berklee Interdisciplinary Arts Institute.
Neil Leonard’s workshop is part of the “Otherworlding” Fabrica residency program curated by Carlos Casas.
